Land use faq

Pirate4x4.com Land Use FAQ and INFO

Please be aware that this is a work in progress!

I know that I am missing info, groups and organizations. I just wanted to get this up ASAP. Any input for what should be added is greatly appreciated.

There is a LOT more that I plan to add to this post, so please check back here occasionally.

MORE TO COME!

Kurt

Q: So how do I save my Trails?

A: In short: get Active! You do not need to be a “land-use” expert or have some special knowledge or skills to get involved. You just need to ACT. We need more people to get active right now since this is such a critical time with all the current closures and closures coming down the pike.

I would suggest taking these steps:

1. Get informed on what is going on.

There are many people out there that do not act because they do not know!

One of the best places to get up-to date information is right here on www.pirate-4x4.ru in the land-use section. There are many Land-use leaders and gurus on this site, and many activists. Posted on a regular basis are many land-use letter campaigns, rallys, meetings to attend etc. here on Pirate4x4.com.

I also suggest signing up for BRC’s action alerts. You can do that for free at this link: https://www.sharetrails.org/secure/l...subscribe&id=2

NORA (website listed below) also has e-mailed action alerts, as does UFWDA (I think)

You should also attend as many meetings as possible as they are posted here on Pirate4x4.com

2. Join an Organization

I have listed many organizations below. They can be grouped into two types, National and Local. I suggest joining a national one, and your local one. If you can afford to join several, that may even be better. See which organizations best fit your interests and goals.

*A WORD OF WARNING*

Yes, our Organizations need money BADLY.

However, just sending in a donation or joining one IS NOT ENOUGH. If we are going to have any hope of saving trails or opening up new ones, we need people active in many other ways, which leads me to step number three:

3. Participate in “Friends of” work-parties

This is critical. There are many “Friends of” groups that desperately need volunteers to keep our trails and campsites in good shape. Nearly all of them are free to join, and nearly all of them are undermanned. If we are going to keep trail open, we NEED more volunteers.

If you do not have a local “Friends of” group: START ONE! It’s very easy to do.
PM me if you need help in starting one, or ask another one of Pirate4x4.com’s other land-use guru’s

4. Become a leader and an activist.

Additional stuff:

Sending in a form letter has little weight. Creat your own letter with substantial comments, even if it is a short letter. Back up your statements with FACTS and reference where you got the FACTS.

Try to work with the land agencies. Give them suggestions. They don't necessarily know what we want. It's much better to get involved at the beginning of a project than to try to get it changed after completion.

Exclamation USFS Travel management

Don't let this slip through the cracks. region 5 will VERY soon be implimenting the travel management plan that will greatly effect all users of National forest lands (thats public land) and you and I are the public. Once some of these roads are closed for winter use, they very well may never be reopended (enviros). This is a slap to our freedoms. Remember once they come and take (it) its gone.

Beware of the rules and they will be in your favor...USFS cannot just close the roads...
they have to have a forest protection order signed by the forest supervisor, and this is only good for a year.
If it is going to be closed for more then a year, they need to have public hearings...
Long before the year is up, get your friends to NICELY let the forest supervisor(s) know you are watching and you want to know WHEN they will reopen the various roads.
I have seen forest service employees intentionally forget to reopen a road when legally obligated to...letting the forest supervisor know in advance you and your associates have an interest and are watching will minimize the questionable closures.
make sure you get copies from anyone sending the letters..these show diligence was not done and allows you to pressure for reopening...

Something like this....
Date
Humbolt National Forest Supervisor Ranger Bob
Dear Ranger Bob,
My friends and I noticed that forest route 3n3 is closed. I want you to know this is a route we use regularly and want to know when it will reopen. We also want to be informed of any decisions on any routes in this area.

Do be sure to let us know what we can do to support your efforts in keeping this trail open. We can help you manage this area by encouraging "tread lightly" with our peers, picking up trash (often from hikers) on the road, making necessary repairs to the route and advising the Forest Service of how things are going on the road.

Again, please consider me a stakeholder or interested party to any activities concerning this road. My email, phone and physical address are:

We are members of Blue Ribbon, Cal4wheel, NAXJA, and blah blah blah
Respectfully

Joe Friendly from the motorized recreation community

X2 and... I don't see CORVA or AMA. I might understand AMA because they are motorcyclist, but CORVA is the only land use only org that I'm aware of in California.

The ONLY reason those were not listed is becuase I wrote that out in about 5 minutes and have not had the time to go back and add them to that thread.

ORBA is not listed either, as well as many other groups and "friends of" orgs.

If any of YOU would like to rewrite this FAQ, go for it and I will sticky it.

I see you're point besides what color star would you assign ORBA anyway.

Congressional Candidates?

Have you considered supporting congressional candidates that understand the off-roading community?

Hey Kurtuleas,

What is the possibility of getting Lance (or whoever the powers may be) to put a larger emphasis on the Land Use section of this site.

I can't speak for everyone, but I firmly believe that the majority of the Off road community does not participate in the sponsored events that are taking up most of Pirates website.

The bottom line is without public access and places to wheel and ride (even just pleasure drive for that matter), this hobby and industry as a whole will die!

I just do not think a sidebar on this website is enough. Maybe once a week front page Pirate article on Land use. I think everyone in this Land use Forum understands, but the majority of Pirate4x4's website users have it go right under their noses.

Tommy

Would be nice but I think everyone is just done at this point, you post link after link to sites where it only takes 5 minutes to comment and nobody takes you up on it, hey the gun people have it together and we don't just face it and move on I say.
